THE SIDEWALK GARDEN

A formal garden,
at the park’s edge.

A living study in foliage, light and proportion.

Planting composition

Palette family

Railing accents

Dense planting at the eight midpoints between posts. Change accents independently of the palette.

Myrtle canopy

Four young / maintained forms. The seven tree centers stay fixed.

Continuous railing garden

Planting mix

Continuous planting follows the base of the railing on the areaway side, with the entrance kept open.

Urns for scale Hide to inspect the two level surfaces

Level urn patches sit at the stair edges, replacing the ends of the railing beds and keeping the walking route open. The side beds meet the stair walls and continue to the areaway entrance. Explore Entrance and Side garden below.

Existing context

The measured-looking scan is an uncalibrated reference. Photographic context retains its captured lighting.

Clipped and divided dimensions are maintenance targets. Flowering windows are illustrative; local conditions vary.

At the foot of Buena Vista Park

The approximately 37-acre hill and its canopy shape the winter sun horizon. Summer exposure opens substantially when the existing street crowns are removed.

Water, planting & maintenance

Drip irrigation is included. Boxwood and flowering crowns need drained soil, protected from concentrated downhill runoff. The paving remains an open bypass; drainage details require design.

What this visualization establishes

Eight dense railing accents occupy the midpoints between adjacent posts. The post references include nine visible stations and one inferred uphill terminal; low hedges continue through the post locations.

The unified bed, fixed curb, owner-marked hydrant and maintained plant envelopes follow the reviewed plan. The hydrant review radius includes the five-foot exterior rule plus provisional body and position allowances.

Sun position is calculated for San Francisco. Regional shade uses sampled 2023 LiDAR horizons with approximate scan registration. This is a visual simulation, not a calibrated illuminance, drainage or permit analysis.

Asset provenance

Original detailed botanical models and authored hardscape use physically based materials. Concrete and soil maps are CC0 assets from Poly Haven. Existing architecture is retained scan context.
